                          April 2012

Editor: Kristin Shields            www.quiltsqq.com              President: Martha Sanders

Our Next Guild Meeting is Monday, April 9, 2012.

Fat Quarter drawing for April- April in Paris

Fat quarter themes are a little different this year. We’ll give you a song title that should evoke a theme or idea. Use your imagination and have a little fun. Bring your fat quarter to the meeting with your name pinned on or you can use an address sticker.

President’s Message

Martha S.

It's hard to believe we are one fat quarter into the year!  I hope you agree we've had some nice programs and fun workshops with one workshop to come.  Our April program presenter, Maggie Ball, is well known in the quilt world and has been on several TV quilting shows.  It should be a good one.

I hope you are thinking about this year's challenge quilt.  Do you remember your favorite childhood book or the book your kids begged you to read over and over again?   I know there are so many challenges out there: the SOQS Small Wonders challenge, the SOQS challenge block and the Modern Quilt challenge blocks.  We always look forward to our quilt show's special display of our quilts.

While we had a fabulous February and mixed March weather-wise, it's always good quilting weather.   Let's see those retreat projects, no matter what state of completion at our next meeting!

Important Reminders

The meeting begins at 6:45 pm.  Unless you are assisting with setup, please don’t enter the meeting room before 6:15 pm.  When you arrive at the meeting, remember to check-in at the membership table and pick up your door prize ticket if you are wearing your cloth nametag.   As always, please turn your cell phones off during the meeting.

Jane D. and Shannon P.

Sadie R. and Lani S. have volunteered to bring beverages.  Loesje A., Kayla H., and Kristin S. have volunteered to bring snacks. If you find you are not able to bring what you volunteered to contribute, please call Jane D. or Shannon P.

Kate M., Kim M., Loesje A., Catherine E. and Gayle G.

Save May 3, 4:00 - 6:00 pm for the annual New Member's Tea. This year we will be at B.J's Quilt Basket. This event is especially to celebrate members who have joined in the last year, although long time members are invited as well. Be prepared for fun, food, share and tell, and surprises.   Questions? Call anyone on the membership committee.

2012 MBQG Raffle Quilt

Susan M.

Have you purchased your raffle tickets for our BEAUTIFUL raffle quilt this year?   Remember, we ask that each member purchase a minimum of $20 worth of tickets---that is 24 tickets this year!   ($1 each/6 tickets for $5)   Please look for me on "clipboard alley" at any upcoming guild meeting.  Also, we will be selling tickets during this year's Central Oregon SHOP HOP=== watch for sign-ups at April's guild meeting, or e-mail me at slmondry@msn.com  if you can work a slot on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.  Details will follow at April's meeting.   Our raffle quilt is the main source of income for the guild, other than membership dues, so please help SELL those TICKETS!

MBQG Boutique

Mary Ann B.

Our new Boutique will open for business at our 2012 August Quilt Show.  We will have a minimum of ten items for sale.  These items are luggage tags, luggage handles, passport/cell phone holders, needle holders, scissor cases, plastic bag storage containers, hot pads, casserole hot pads, receiving blankets, 18” doll clothes, individual design walls, and others to be named.

The website for the needle holders is: www.sewprimkhris.blogspot.com.  That website will show you the required materials, step-by-step instruction, and the finished product.

Our plan is to have one day a month for members to come together to sew our items.  Once an item is made then, the Guild gets to have one and the maker can make as many as they want and need for themselves.  Of course, if a member would share more than one with the Guild, it would be greatly appreciated.

The first of three scheduled days is April 16th from 10:00am until 4:30pm at the Bend Parks and Rec Building in their community room.  The location is 799 SW Colombia Street, near the Old Mill District.  The other scheduled days are May 24th and June 4th.  They will be held at the same location.  We want participants to enjoy themselves and have a pleasant day with fellow sewers!

The supplies and materials required for the sewing day will be sent out at a later date.  A sewing machine and basic sewing supplies will be needed.  Depending on the items you will make, some specific materials will be needed.  Velcro, lace, rickrack, batting insulated batting, non-acrylic batting, bias tape, selvages from fabric, and small buttons are a few of the specific materials.   If you have any of these supplies that could be donated, it would be appreciated.

We have room for additional participants at the April 16th sewing day.  We also have fun planned into the day!  If you want to come, please contact Mary Ann B. at 541-312-9513 or e-mail at topsytavern@yahoo.com.  We would appreciate having people sign up ahead of time.  If you want to stop by and see the fun, we would love to have you.  Thanks for helping with The Boutique!

Community Quilts

 Karen F. Diana L. and Jane D.

Community Quilts meets on the second Wednesday of the month--in April, the date is Wednesday the 11th. Time:   11 a.m. - 3 p.m.  Place: Nativity Lutheran Church, located at the corner of SE Knott and SE Brosterhaus in Bend.

Bring your machine, basic sewing supplies, your lunch, and a community quilt project you are already working on. If you don't already have a project, we have tubs of fabric, patterns, and even kits for you to work with.

Special need:  We have been given a number of completed quilt tops.   We need members to quilt and finish these tops.   We can supply batting and backing.   If you can't come on Wednesday, please contact one of the Community Quilt co-chairs and we will get the top/batting/backing to you!   Quilting can be as simple as you want--stitch in the ditch is great.   You can also tie these quilts.   But we need your help in any case.

Community Food Drive

Diana L.

Thank you for your donations to the food pantry.  We are again asking for donations of canned corn or peas for April.  The pantry served a large number of people in March and all your donations are appreciated.  We accept any food or money donations.  Keep up the good work!

Our Guild Library

Linda M.

The April raffle book is Flip Your Way to Fabulous Quilts by Donna Lynn Thomas.  This book takes folded corners to new heights.  Use the stitch and flip technique to make one of 13 suggested patterns.  Raffle tickets are $1 each/6 for $5.  The following books were donated to the Library by a member:  The Apron Book by EllynAnne Geisel and Thimbleberries, Quilting a Patchwork Garden, by Lynette Jensen.

Kayla H.

April- Maggie Ball will be here from Bainbridge Island, Washington. She is known for her outreach with children and Mongolia. She is also going to have a workshop while she is here on kaleidoscopic pinwheels.

May- This meeting will feature member techniques. If you would like to see something or share something please contact Kayla at kayla.traver@vandals.uidaho.edu.

June- This meeting will feature Joann Myers and Barbara Copeland.  Joann will be sharing some civil war quilts from her collection that will not be at our quilt show.  Barbara will be showing us some of her quilts and sharing some tricks that help her along the way.

Lisa N.

There are still a few spots left in the "Kaleidoscopic Pinwheels" workshop with Maggie Ball to be held on Wednesday, April 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  We are planning a workshop with Cheryl Malkowski from Roseburg, Oregon on September 9 and Wendy Hill and Pat Pease will give a workshop on "Color & Design Play on Tuesday, October 9.  More details on each of these workshops will be provided next month.  Thanks for supporting the Guild's workshops!

2012 Quilt Challenge

Sylvia K. and Janelle R.

The 2012 Quilt Challenge promises to be a really fun and colorful event. We have decided to have a theme of children’s story books. Participants choose a story from one of their own favorites or one that they have read to anyone else. Picture books and children's chapter books fit the criteria. Participants can use any type of technique but all work must be done by only that person. The dimensions for the quilt are to be a minimum of 36 inches on any side and a maximum of 60 inches on any one side. We would like to exhibit the book along with the quilt. All quilts entries are due on or before the July Guild Meeting.

The quilts will be judged on best use of theme, quilting, and overall workmanship. They will also be judged by the public at the 2012 Quilt Show in the Park for a Viewer’s Choice award.

We look forward to seeing many wonderful interpretations of some great children’s literature. If you have any questions, please call Sylvia or Janelle.
