July 2011

  www.quiltsqq.com                                              President: Martha Sanders

Our Next Guild Meeting is Monday, July 11th, 2011.

Fat Quarter for July is “Stars & Stripes”

Message from the President

Martha S.

How beautiful is Bend right now?    Not as scenic as a day in Sisters in July and nor as awesome as a day in August in Pioneer Park.     What makes those places so wonderful?  QUILTS! QUILTS! QUILTS!     And I know that so many of you are stitching away at this year’s entries.    But remember, both the Sisters’ Outdoor Quilt Show and Partners in Care are looking for some of your other quilts to show off right here in Bend.   You’ll learn more about this later in the newsletter.

You can never have enough pre-wound bobbins or enough pre-threaded hand needles as you prepare for the many classes offered in the area during Quilt Week and beyond.   We’ll be looking for your latest and greatest works of quilting art at our future meetings.    In the meantime, don’t forget that we are still looking for your help with the raffle quilt ticket selling and the support of Community Quilts with your donations.

Thank you for your enthusiasm at our guild meetings and a big welcome to new members.  We love it when you bring a friend to share our fun.   This is what makes our guild great.   Have you considered a more active role with the guild?  We have many board openings for next year that come in all sizes for all members.   See you at the meeting!

In Seattle you haven't had enough coffee until you can thread a sewing machine while it's running.  ~Jeff Bezos

Guild Raffle Tickets

Twyla B., Treasurer, Martha S. President

The sale of quilt raffle tickets has been slow.  We need to spend some time selling to buyers in the public.  We could use a few people who have time available for just one to three hours on a day to sit with the quilt at a heavy foot traffic location.  Our guild needs to boost our awareness of the quality work that we can provide for them. Not everyone is able do what the Guild has available.  Let’s get out there and show our community the quality work of this quilt and let them know about our quilt show in August.  Watch for clipboard sign-ups for many local sales venues.

Gail K., Kayla H., and Chris M. will be selling raffle tickets for the quilt at next meeting. Pictures will be available for help with selling.  There are only 1000 tickets, priced at $5.00.  Limited amount means a better chance of winning.  Remember your checkbook or cash to purchase your raffle tickets!

Important Reminders

The meeting begins at 6:45 p.m.  Unless you are assisting with setup, please don’t enter the meeting room before 6:15 pm.  When you arrive at the meeting, remember to check-in at the membership table and pick up your door prize ticket if you are wearing your cloth nametag.   As always, please turn your cell phones off during the meeting.

Sadie R.

Kathe S. and Mary R have volunteered to bring beverages and Marie J., Earline M., Gunda K, and Pris B. have volunteered to bring snacks for our July meeting.   If anyone finds they cannot bring what they volunteered to contribute, please call Sadie R. @ 389-2532.  Thanks ladies.

Community Quilts

Mary T., Karen F, and Norma W.

Cleaning out your fabric closet??  Might you have some unloved, passed over items??  Are you looking at them saying, “What was I thinking???”  We need large pieces for borders and backings, and of course, large remnants.  Time to put these babies to good use and donate them to Community Quilts.

Thank you for taking so many of the kits in June.  Thanks to Mary T., we still have some that are “just right for you.”  (“Take all you want; we’ll make more!”)

Community Quilts’ Day is Wednesday, July 13, from 10-3 (new earlier time) at the Nativity Lutheran Church (directions on the CommQlts page on the website).  Bring your BSS, lunch, beverage, and the project you are working on.  If you bring a finished top, we'll match it with backing and batting and help you pin it (bring your pins) while we laugh along.

Come one, come ALL!!

We have three exciting workshops coming up in the next few months. The first is with Lorraine Torrence from Seattle, Washington who will be teaching a "Collage Curves Mini Quilt" class on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost of the class is $50 and will include lunch and a pattern.  We have a few open spots so if you didn't put your name on the interest list that was circulated at the June meeting and are interested in attending, please let me know.

Next, on Saturday, October 8, Jean Wells will be presenting a workshop titled "Outside The Lines." The quilts from Gee's Bend have fascinated Jean since she first saw them and they are the inspiration for this workshop. Working intuitively is a fun approach to quilt design and can produce astounding results. In this workshop we will explore design options as well as techniques with some exercises and then participate in a discussion on color. The rest of the time will be spent on your own exploration into working "Outside the Lines". Your challenge will be to work in a color palette new to you and to explore design. The workshop fee is $15 (includes a light lunch) and sign ups will take place at the July and September meetings. The workshop is limited to 20 people. Please visit http://www.jeanwellsquilts.com/ws-outsidethelines.html for more information on this workshop. You won't want to miss this!

On Monday, October 10, 2011 Sharon Baker and Elaine Bowles from Boise, Idaho will be teaching a class on "Fabric in the Mind's Eye in Five Easy Pieces." In this workshop, we will explore creating art on rectangles and piecing them as a jacket. Visit www.kapamaker.com for some stunning pictures and more information. The cost of the workshop is $65 and will include lunch and the jacket pattern. We may have some openings for this workshop so please let me know if you are interested (if your name is not on the interest list that was circulated at the June meeting).

Remember to bring your checkbook to the July meeting to hold your spot for these great workshops. Enjoy the summer!

QuiltWorks Quilt Gallery First Friday Reception is July First from 5 to 7 PM. Our July Featured Quilter is Shelia Finzer. Sheila’s photo inspired quilts are intricately collage, painted and thread painted artistic renditions of landscapes, nature studies, portraits, and abstracts. The group exhibit is Central Oregonians that have created “animal-themed” quilts; a great smile factor for our Quilt Show guests! The exhibits will run through all of July and guests will be invited to vote for their favorite “animal” quilt with gift certificates awarded to the top three vote-getters.

Our BIG NEWS is that we are excited to share with everyone is that our Quilt Gallery has been recognized by the City of Bend for a Bend Arts, Beautification and Cultural Award. From the city’s website  “The Arts, Beautification and Culture Commission was created by the Bend City Council in January, 2002. The Council's purpose establishing this commission was to create an advisory commission to make recommendations on the appropriate role for the City of Bend to take in supporting Art, Beautification and Culture, to annually identify appropriate City involvement in arts, community beautification and culture with emphasis on community gatherings, events, cultural tourism and the arts.” We're really proud of our quilt gallery and this award!

The rest of July News is all about the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. We are chock full of great fabrics, patterns, kits, samples, books and everything new and exciting from Spring Market. There isn’t a better time to visit QuiltWorks than in July.

Thanks again for your support and patronage!
