Fat Quarter drawing for June- Teddy Bear Picnic
Bring a fat quarter that fits into your idea of the monthly theme and
you could win a whole bag full of fabric!
Use your imagination and have fun!
This year’s themes are based on song titles.
July Meeting is July
Okay, so we recently had 7 inches of new snow on the mountain but the
summer events in Bend are ON!
Our main event is in 2 short months, August 18th, and we need
your help. Our quilt show is
unique, with no admission fee, no jury, wonderful venue and wonderful
quilts. We need help from set up
to take down, quilt collection, hospitality, sales table, hostesses, demos,
guild info, raffle ticket sales and more.
Please take part in this very fun event. It’s a time to get to know the other members by their work and
to have a relaxed conversation with them.
Please sign up for the many activities involved with the quilt show at
the next meeting.
While I will not be at the June meeting, there is a key issue that will
be presented. The Bylaws and
Standing Rules have been carefully reviewed and edited and will be presented
for your approval at this meeting.
You will receive the details of these via a separate email
(mailing). Please contact any of
the MBQG board members with your questions or concerns. Kayla H. and Lisa N. will be presiding
at this meeting. Enjoy their
energy, even if they don’t sing or read a story. I will be in New England and will return to ‘Ore-A-Gone’ in

as just plain helpful, to assist them in getting their ideas into reality. Kathleen G. and Rosie W. will welcome

The 2012 Review Committee has completed its work. You should have
received the recommended revisions in a separate email. Please review
these two documents along with the cover memo, and print out a copy for
yourself if you wish. Review Committee members are waiting by their

changes will take place at the June 11 meeting. If you did not receive

Quilt Show in the Park
Julia J. and Kathleen G.
Our guild Quilt Show in the Park is a little over 2
months away and we still have many things to do to get ready. Please be sure to mark your calendars
for August 18, ask your husbands to agree to help us with set-up and tear-down
. . . and plan your vacations so
that you’re in Bend to enjoy our big day!
We still need committee chairs for the following positions:
Set-Up; Viewer’s Choice and Member Info Table; Quilt Return; and Quilt
Collection and Transport. In
addition to the committee chairs there are many openings for volunteers in 2
hour stints throughout the day.
Please come to the June meeting prepared to volunteer for one of the
committees. Thank you!
collection will take place the day before the show, Friday,
August 17th at Nativity Lutheran Church. We need many volunteers that day to help with intake of
quilts and for organization and pinning.
am on quilt show day, we need every able-bodied person we can get to
set up the quilt frames and hang the quilts. For set up, we need
many more people than will fit on a sign-up sheet! And we need LOTS of husbands (and/or sons) for the heavier work. Please just show up at the park, and
join in the fun!
pm on quilt show day, we need lots of people to take down the quilts
and take down the frames. This
always goes very quickly, and again we
need husbands. No need to stay
at the park all day.
More info about quilt show day will be forthcoming in the next two
guild meetings and in the newsletter.
If you’ve never been to the show, it’s a very fun, community oriented
event that allows lots of time for conversation and sharing. There is also a potluck for guild
members. You don’t want to miss
Sisters Outdoor Quilt
Join us for an Artist Reception for the Quilt for Two Rivers Project;
June 15, 5 pm at Black Butte Ranch; everyone is welcome. Please come see
this fabulous installation by our talented Central Oregon master quilters.
We still need sponsor quilts! Sponsor quilts are on display for
two weeks to a month (depending on location) in Quilt Show sponsoring
businesses in Sisters, Bend & Redmond. They can be for sale, we can
take quilts smaller than 36”, and you can register them online from our website. Please consider sharing a couple of quilts to
thank our sponsors – we still need over 100!
The Small Wonders Challenge quilts are on display at the Stitchin’ Post
throughout June. You can vote for your favorite for the $100 Viewer’s
Choice award either at the store or online. Check our website after June 1 for online voting
and information about purchasing the Small Wonders challenge quilts.
Tickets for the Men Behind the Quilts Calendar premiere party
are still available. The calendar will be HERE by
mid-June or you can buy it for a $2 discount at the premiere party and get it
autographed at the same time! The quilts in the calendar will be
auctioned at the party – and there are some real treasures in there. The
images from the calendar will be exhibited at Sisters Athletic Club in June and
a selection of the ‘calendar quilts’ will be hanging in the Sisters Library in
June as well – come over and check them out!

This month we will have a special day! Bring strips of fabric between one and
three inches wide, they can be various lengths. They don't have to be perfectly straight. We will have strips to share plus
several patterns to share. We can
also cut strips from our community fabric. We will meet from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on June 13th at
Nativity Lutheran Church. Hope to
see you there!
We have a new and exciting incentive for
making a Community Quilt this year.
In April, our featured speaker, Maggie Ball, presented quilts made by
the Mongolian quilters that she works with. Many guild members donated generously to help the Mongolian
Quilting Center raise funds for a new building. Maggie then presented the guild with a beautiful Mongolian
quilt featuring the Olzii symbol, a never ending knot. This symbol is often painted on the
doors of Mongolian yurts. It is
believed the Olzii symbol brings
long life and prosperity to the inhabitants and protects them from evil spirits
and wild animals.
In the spirit of community giving for which
the quilt was presented to the guild, it has been decided by the board members
that this quilt will be raffled off to members who donate a quilt, or
participate in the making of a quilt (ie- piece blocks, make a top, machine
quilt or sew on binding), for our Community Quilts program. For every quilt (or part thereof)
donated in 2012 you will get an entry into the raffle. The more quilts you donate, the better
your chances of winning this very special quilt. The Community Quilts committee keeps names of all members
who participate and will be doing the raffle which will take place at the
January 2013 general meeting of the guild.
June items for the food pantry are canned peas and corn. In March 2012, the Food Pantry
distributed 392 bags of groceries; and 120 volunteer hours were donated in
collecting, stocking and opening the food pantry for distribution. We appreciate your support and accept
any food or money donations. Thank
Our Guild Library
Anita F. will be handling the library at
the June meeting. The raffle quilt
for June is Patchwork-play Quilts by Lynn Roddy Brown. This book has projects to make use of
scraps, spare parts and leftovers. Tickets are $1 each/$5 for 6. The following books added to the
library were donated by members: Fast
Fun and Easy Fabric Bags, by Pam Archer; Free-Style Quilts, A “No Rules”
Approach, by Susan Carlson; Fun with Wool Felt, 19 wool felt projects
for you and your home, by Nancy Javier and Barbara Finwall. There will be a
selection of library books to check out and you may return books at the
meeting. Thank you for your
support of the Guild library.
We've got two exciting workshops coming up in the fall! On
Monday, September 10, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Cheryl Malkowski from
Roseburg, OR will be teaching a workshop on "Twisted Ribbons."
This fun quilt, assembled in vertical rows, is a simple arrangement of
one block with different colorations and positions.
Twisted Ribbons quilt
On Tuesday, October 9, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wendy Hill and Pat
Pease will present "Color and Design Play." All you need to
know for this class you learned in preschool! Play with colors and textures
through a series of challenges with Pat, the spontaneous thinker, and Wendy,
the linear thinker, with intuitive leaps. You'll think it's a play day
but there will be underlying concepts in color, value, composition, techniques
and more. Both workshops will be held at the Bend Park and Recreation's
Community Room on Columbia Street.
Also, we are trying something different in the way we price the
workshops. These workshops will be priced based on how many people sign
up for the class - the more people that sign up, the lower the price! The
intent is to price them to break even - the Guild does not make a profit.
So, if you're interested, sign up on the interest list and as it gets
closer we'll have a good idea of what each workshop will cost based on the
number of people that signed up. Sign-up at the June Guild meeting or
contact Lisa N. if you are interested.
2012 Quilt Challenge
K. and Janelle R.
The 2012 Quilt
Challenge promises to be a really fun and colorful event. We have decided to have
a theme of children’s story books. Participants choose a story from one of
their own favorites or one that they have read to anyone else. Picture books
and children's chapter books fit the criteria. Participants can use any type of
technique but all work must be done by only that person. The dimensions for the
quilt are to be a minimum of 36 inches on any side and a maximum of 60 inches
on any one side. We would like to exhibit the book along with the quilt. All quilts entries are due on
or before the July Guild Meeting. Contact
Sylvia or Janelle about quilt delivery.
The quilts will be
judged on best use of theme, quilting, and overall workmanship. They will also
be judged by the public at the 2012 Quilt Show in the Park for a Viewer’s
Choice award. We look forward to
seeing many wonderful interpretations of some great children’s literature.
Around the Block
There is a multi-media art show in the ground-level hallway at Bend
City Hall, from now through September 30.
Guild member, Janelle R., has an art quilt displayed. Nearly all
of the other art in the exhibit is NON-fabric media. Janelle’s quilt is a
gorgeous landscape, using some of the techniques she showed us at the
Ardie Y. will be having hip surgery May 30 and I am sure
she will enjoy a card and/or phone call.
We wish her a speedy recovery.
We were very sorry to hear that Karen
Foell’s daughter passed away Thursday, May 24th. The service will be held at United
Methodist on May 30th at 10:00 am.
If you have any news among our guild members or
previous members, such as births, weddings, illness or passing, please contact
Libby S. 541-330-8186 (firstname.lastname@example.org)
and a card will be mailed on behalf of our Guild.
