October 8th Program- Wendy Hill and Pat Pease

Fat Quarter drawing for October- Monster Mash

President’s Message

Martha S.

It’s the season when I remember the wonderful autumn colors of the maples and oaks back East, and the smell of apple orchards.  Yet I relish the colors in our many quilt shops here, and these colors are easier to stitch!  It’s not too late in the season to take a look at the class offerings at the quilt shops in the area and it’s not too early to start thinking about next year’s quilt shows.  Our own quilt show will celebrate its 30th anniversary!

We have a fabulous opportunity to boost our budget with a Barnes and Noble book fair on Saturday October 13th and the week following.  We’re having a mini quilt show there and need your help in the many roles that are outlined later in the newsletter.  It’s a great time to shop for those quilt books and holiday gift books.

Please consider that you create and maintain this guild with your volunteer efforts.  Chairing or sitting on a committee is a fun and rewarding activity and often does not take much of your time.  Even more important is your effort to support our community connection with quilts that you make for the organizations so much in need and to share our love of quilting with the community through our other outreach events.

November is member’s show and tell. Any UFO’s suddenly finished?  Do you have anything from a class or workshop that you’d like to share?  So many folks didn’t have a chance to see your quilts because of the rain shorted quilt show.  What will you show?

Quilts wanted – If you have a challenge quilt from this year’s children’s book challenge, a novel idea quilt from Rules of Civility or another book specific quilt, like the Undercover Quilter’s ‘Soul’ quilts, we’d like to feature some of them at the book fair on October 13th.  Please bring them to the guild meeting on Monday 10/8.     We will hang them on Friday 10/12 and will be hung throughout the store for 1 week.

A Very Important Note about Parking at Partners in Care

Kristin S.

Partners in Care (PiC) has asked guild members to not park in the section on the south side of the PiC lot (far left as you drive in) that are marked with signs designated for Guests to PiC.  There are two signs at either end of the section and they may be hard to see in the dark, so take note of them while we still have some evening light!

Members who have handicap tags are, of course, still able to park in the handicap spots which are to the right of the designated guest spots.  Guild members who are able are encouraged to park in the lot just north of PiC.  This requires a short walk up an unpaved slope.  It is also fine to park on the grass on the north side of the PiC lot where there are signs designating that area for overflow parking.  If you have any questions you may contact me or Martha S.

Jane D. and Shannon P.

Karen K. and Jane G. have volunteered to bring beverages and Zelma T., Cindy P., and Laurie T. have volunteered to bring snacks. If you find you are not able to bring what you volunteered to contribute, please call Jane D. or Shannon P.  The meeting begins at 6:45 pm.  As always, please turn your cell phones off before the meeting.

October Book Fair Fundraiser

Martha S.

We have an opportunity for raising funds for the guild through a book fair/quilt show at Barnes & Noble Bookstore. The guild will receive a percentage from each sale made that week (10/13-10/20, 2012) when the guild is mentioned at the cash register at the store and online with a code (10873388- please share this with your family, friends and co-workers). More details will be shared at the October meeting. We would like your help in making the "quilt guild day" at Barnes & Noble a success.

Help is needed on Friday, October 12th at 4:30 p.m. to hang quilts around the store and help is needed on Saturday, October 13th for various areas in the store where we have exhibits, etc. We would appreciate a two hour shift (10-12, 12-2, 2-4) and need a minimum of 6 members total per shift. Areas to be covered are: Hostess (greet people and give information about the quilts hanging in the store), Adult Information (including about our guild, its mission, etc.), Community Quilts area (sharing a few Community Quilts and information about groups we donate/support through the guild), and an area where children participate in a hands-on project to take home and view/"touch" actual quilt pieces.

Please e-mail Martha S. if you are willing to help. Make note of time/area for volunteering if you have a preference. There will be a sign-up at the October meeting, but you can choose a slot for helping by e-mailing me ahead of the meeting time. Our guild could earn a nice financial boost for this effort. The board has been looking for additional ways to earn money for the guild and this is one opportunity that will help that mission. Please consider helping in any way you can.  Thank you.

We had a very successful first year for the Boutique.  We are beginning preparation for the Quilt Show 2013 Boutique.  Please put October 23rd on your calendar as a Boutique sewing day.  We will have four items ready for demonstration.  We need your help!  Please contact a committee member with any questions.

Community Quilts

Karen F. Diana L. and Jane D.

A BIG THANK YOU to all you lovely ladies who contributed to community quilts since our last dispersal of quilts!!!!!  We recently distributed 97 quilts (yes, the same number as last time - just a coincidence), to the five charities we donate to.  They are always thrilled to get them and it is so great to hear all of the oohs and ahhhs.

We have many quilt tops that need to be quilted.  We package these quilts with the backing to fit, batting and material for the binding.  We would appreciate any help with getting these quilts finished.  If you do not like to do the binding, we have ladies who will complete that step.  These quilts will be available at the general meetings, on Wednesdays at Community Quilts or contact Diana L, Karen F or Jane D.  Every quilt donated helps someone in need.

The Touchmark Quilters group has donated three great quilts to the Mt. Bachelor Guild for community quilts.  Marilyn Will, who is a regular at community quilts day, is a member.  Thank you Marilyn and friends.

MBQG has received several thank you notes from the youth at Nativity Lutheran Church. The students received “Senior Quilts”--quilts that were given to graduating high school or college seniors.  These quilts were made and donated by MBQG members.  All the students enjoyed the quilts and plan to use them on their beds.

The October community quilt day will be on October 10th at Nativity Lutheran Church from 11 am until 3 pm.   Bring your basic sewing supplies, your lunch, and come enjoy the day with us.  You are all welcome!

Community Food Drive

Diana L.

Let’s get together and bring canned tuna or chicken to the October meeting.  If everyone brought one can, think how much that would help the food pantry.  Thank you for all your donations—we accept any food or money donations.

Our last workshop of the year is coming up and you won't want to miss it!  We need a few more individuals to sign up to make this a go.  Learn about color, value, composition, techniques and more in a special workshop with Wendy Hill and Pat Pease.  The workshop will be held on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  These two talented, local quilters will be leading a "Color and Design Play" workshop and will have a special exhibit at the Pacific International Quilt Show in 2013.  This is our chance to get a sneak peek of the workshop they will be presenting in conjunction with the exhibit.  All you need to know for this class you learned in preschool!  Play with colors and textures through a series of challenges with Pat and Wendy.  You'll think it's a play day, but there will be underlying concepts in color, value, composition, techniques and more.  The cost is only $38 which includes a starter kit and a full day of information and learning - best of all, there will be no projects you'll need to complete as a result of the workshop.  Let Lisa N. know if you are interested.

We've already scheduled several great workshops for 2013 - more details coming soon!

Caring Corner

Libby S.

Ruth P. is having some health issues and I am sure she would appreciate a card of support from you.  Janelle R. won Viewer's Choice at the City Walls art installation.  Beautiful job and I hear she is already working on the next one.  We were sad to hear of the passing of Jill’s husband.  Our thoughts and prayers are with her.  A card of support would be nice.

Happy Fall Y’all!!  Hard to believe it’s time to get back to work on those quilting projects already!  Put this on your calendar – Sew Oregon Shop Hop!  It runs from Oct 5th through Oct 21st – so lots of time to do the whole state if you’d like to, there are 43 shops involved inside 4 districts, but in order to be eligible to win some great prizes all you have to finish is one district, and our Central Oregon district is just the eight shops that do our local hop – so, come join us & collect your 6” finished block from each shop, and enjoy another fun Shop Hop!!

We have lots more reasons for you to think about getting inspired – you could join in on lots of Halloween project classes with Evelyn, make “A Little Somethin’ Jacket”  with Sue (this you’ll get done probably in class!!) on Oct. 6th, make an autumn runner with Evelyn on the 11th, or join Bevalee in learning a little more about machine quilting!  Take a look at our classes on-line at www.bjsquiltbasket.com or stop by the shop for a schedule.

One more event we hope you will add to your calendar, is to join us in helping make quilts for Project Linus. Come help provide the love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets or quilts, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”  So join us in becoming a “Blanketeer” on October 10th from 1-5pm. Cynthia’s will have machines available to sew with if you don’t want to bring your own. We will have the Project Linus fabric line available for purchase; some of the proceeds from this purchase go directly to Project Linus, and we, too, will offer quilt kits for $15.00, upon completion of your quilt you will get a $10 BJ’s gift certificate.

So, see you soon at BJ’s – it’s the quilting place to be!!
