September 10th Program- Cheryl Malkowski

Fat Quarter drawing for September- Somewhere Over the Rainbow

President’s Message

Martha S.

A very sincere thank you to all who participated and helped at the Quilt Show in the Park! While abbreviated, it was the best yet with so many techniques, so much talent. Joanne, Kristin and Janelle displayed their quilt journeys wonderfully. The group displays and challenges received many compliments.

I’ll be asking for volunteers for our budget committee at the September meeting. This is a committee of 5 plus our treasurer and nonprofit coordinator. I’ll also be asking for volunteers for our fundraiser book fair at Barnes and Noble on October 13th. There’s an article about this further on in the newsletter. Please consider these short term activities as a way to contribute and meet new friends.

It’s getting ‘crispy’ outside.  I’m looking forward to apple crisp, pumpkin cheesecake and Halloween quilts. I suppose I’ll try to finish that December holiday UFO too. What are you working on?  Will we see it at our November meeting for a special show and tell?

Jane D. and Shannon P.

Kim M. and Kris L. have volunteered to bring beverages and Sharon S., Shannon P., and Suzi T. have volunteered to bring snacks. If you find you are not able to bring what you volunteered to contribute, please call Jane D. or Shannon P.  The meeting begins at 6:45 pm.  As always, please turn your cell phones off before the meeting.

October Book Fair Fundraiser

Martha S.

Once again we’ll be at Barnes and Noble as they host a book fair supporting our guild’s art and education mission. A percentage of the sales made in the store or online will be contributed to the Guild when customers mention that they’d like to support MBQG, anytime between October 13th and October 20th. This also happens to be teacher appreciation week at Barnes and Noble – let your teacher friends know how to help us! Last year we received $600. We displayed quilts, talked about our Community Quilt Program, demonstrated quilting and had hands on activity for kids. Our presence is for one day, October 13th. We’ll hang selected Children’s Literature challenge quilts, Novel Idea quilts, and the Undercover Quilters’ quilts in the store on Friday Oct 12th. We need about 20 people to help at various times. There’ll be a clipboard in the ‘alley’ at the September and October guild meetings. Get your book and magazine shopping lists ready too.

2013 Guild Retreat

Barb P., Jill M. and 2014 protégée Shannon P.

The location and dates for the Guild’s annual retreat have been decided.  It will take place at Seventh Mt Resort on March 8, 9 and 10 (Fri, Sat and Sun).  Price will be $250 and includes two night’s lodging, Fri and Sat lunch and dinner, and a hearty breakfast/brunch on Sun.  There might be a door prize or two...and maybe a little fun…..oh!……and sewing too.  So, make your reservation to save your spot!  Deposit is $100 with the balance due before Feb 15, 2013.  In addition, we will again be able to take ‘Day Sewers’ for $150.00 (all the same food/fun….just sleep at home).  We can begin taking registration at the September meeting so bring your checkbook to hold your spot!

Quilt Show Boutique

Mary Ann B.

The Boutique did very well during the Quilt Show.  We thank everyone who participated in the creation of the items. We were very excited that the doll clothes also were well received and sold well. Our efforts doubled the amount put in the budget for our line item.  We can only be very pleased.  Thank you to the Boutique committee: Marie J., Jane G., Darlene P., Karen K., and Lora F.  They were great!

We have already met to begin prep for next year.  We have scheduled four sewing days and also encourage people to sew at home.  We had some wonderful items that members made at home.  Think of possibly working from home.

Lora and Jane G. will have our remaining items available at the September meeting.  Bring a few dollars and purchase an item as a gift.

If you have an interest in the Boutique, we would love to involve you on the committee for next year.  Please contact me at topsytavern@yahoo.com

2012 Raffle Quilt

Susan M.

Thank you to everyone for purchasing raffle quilt tickets and helping out at the selling venues this year.  We made a little over $2300 to contribute to the guild.  Our very own Rosie W. won the quilt!   I believe she plans to donate it to a local organization for them to possibly raffle the quilt for raising funds.  What a great way to help support another worthy organization!  Thank you again to those of you that helped with any of the Raffle Quilt Sales---not to mention the wonderful members that helped make the beautiful quilt.

Community Quilts

Karen F. Diana L. and Jane D.

Community quilts will meet at Nativity Lutheran Church on Sept. 12th at 11:00.  Bring your basic sewing supplies and your lunch and join us for a fun sewing day.  We have distributed the 97 wonderful quilts you wonderful ladies have turned in and will make another distribution soon, so please turn in any quilts you have finished.  You can call us for batting or backings or stop by on Wednesdays and we will help you get what you need.

Community Food Drive

Diana L.

Please bring canned peas and corn to the September guild meeting for the Food Pantry.  Last year (from July 2011 to June 2012) the Food Pantry at Nativity Lutheran Church distributed 59,170 pounds of food.  That helps a lot of our neighbors.  Thank you for all your donations—we accept any food or money donations.

Mongolian Quilt Raffle

Martha S.

If you recall, Maggie Ball presented a colorful and interesting program last spring about her connections with quilters in Mongolia. We collected some donations from her and in turn she donated one of the Mongolian quilts to us. The Guild board decided that we should raffle this quilt by recognizing contributions to Community Quilts and the Boutique. We’ve been keeping track of your efforts. For each CQ contribution and for each sew day attended, you will receive one chance to win. We’ll have more sew days this fall and you always have an opportunity to contribute a Community Quilt. The raffle will take place at the January 2013 meeting so there’s still time to enter. Martha S. will show the quilt at the meetings.

Quilt Education Program

Martha S.

We had a successful series of visits to a few schools in the Bend-LaPine school district last year to talk about quilting and show some colorful quilts. We have a request from a Girl Scout troop this fall and we hope to expand our presentations to other schools. It’s an easy afternoon, about 45 minutes in the classroom. It goes quickly as the kids are enthusiastic about the quilts. It’s little more than show and tell and telling them about how you quilt or what quilting means to their community (think 2 quilt shows, 6+ quilt stores). Can you help?  See Martha S. or Lisa N.

Our Guild Library

Linda M.

The raffle book for September is Back to Charm School, More Fun Quilts from Country Threads, by Mary Etherington and Connie Tesene. Make the most of 5 inch precut squares or use yardage to make one of these 20 different patterns, including table runners, doll quilts, a pillow and a tree skirt.   Tickets are $1 each/$5 for 6. The following books donated by members were added to the library this month:  Applique Concepts in Sulky, A Complete Guide to Successful Machine Applique, by Joyce Drexler, Peggy Oberbeck and Ginny Jahnke.  Thank you for supporting the Guild library.

Kayla H.

September- Cheryl Malkowski will be here from Roseburg, Oregon. Cheryl has a background in floral design and has written numerous books.  Cheryl is also passionate about teaching and there will also be a workshop, which you can find out more about in the workshop section of the newsletter. Find out more about Cheryl at http://www.cherylmalkowski.com/

October- Wendy Hill and Pat Pease will be here to present a program.  Both are quilters from Central Oregon and have a wealth of information to share with us.

November- This is our yearly business meeting.  We will cover items from this year as well as some topics for the upcoming year.  Please bring your show and tell to share.

September Workshop:  "Twisted Ribbons"

Monday, September 10, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Bend Park and Recreation's Community Room

Cost: $43

We still have a few spots left for the "Twisted Ribbons" workshop.  This is going to be a good one!  Cheryl Malkowski from Roseburg will be teaching how to make this fun quilt which is a simple arrangement of one block with different colorations and positions.  If interested, please send check payable to MBQG to Lisa N.

October Workshop:  "Color and Design Play"

Tuesday, October 9, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bend Park and Recreation's Community Room

Cost: $40 (includes starter kit)

Learn about color, value, composition, techniques and more in a special workshop with Wendy Hill and Pat Pease.  These two talented quilters will be leading a "Color and Design Play" workshop and will have a special exhibit at the Pacific International Quilt Show in 2013.  This is our chance to get a sneak peek of the workshop they will be presenting in conjunction with the exhibit.  All you need to know for this class you learned in preschool!  Play with colors and textures through a series of challenges with Pat (the spontaneous thinker) and Wendy (the linear thinker with intuitive leaps). You'll think it's a play day, but there will be underlying concepts in color, value, composition, techniques and more.  Let Lisa N. know if you are interested.  Thanks for your support of Guild workshops!

Caring Corner

We were sorry to hear about the passing of Mary B., a former guild member.  We are hoping Kayla H.’s husband is on the road to recovery after an accident and Loesje A.’s husband will soon be mobile after knee surgery.

East-of-the-Cascades Quilters Guild Night Out

Joan U., EotCQ organizer

Hi, ladies.  East-of-the-Cascades Quilters, along with Jean Wells and the Stitchin' Post, would like to invite members of your guild to join us in Sisters for Guild Night Out with Gwen Marston, on Wednesday, October 17, 7pm, at The Stitchin' Post.

Over the course of her long career as a quilt artist and teacher, Gwen has written 21 books, including Liberated Quiltmaking (I and II), and Ideas and Inspirations:  Abstract Quilts in Solids.  The class Gwen is teaching at the Stitchin' Post on October 18, "Contemporary Medallions in Solids," is full but taking names for wait list, as is her workshop at Five Pine 10/19-21 with fellow folk quilt artist, Sue Spargo.

Given the enormous popularity of Gwen's classes, we are especially pleased that we can offer this additional opportunity through Guild Night Out.

There will be a $5 charge for the evening to help defray costs.   Reserve your spot by registering at the Stitchin' Post website (www.stitchinpost.com), returning the registration form in the Stitchin' Post's Fall/Winter class schedule, or by calling The Stitchin' Post, 541-549-6061.
